Immunity Boost / Restorative Yoga ~ Tuesdays at 6pm:

What makes us sick?

Chances are that before we come down with a cold, flu, or something more serious, we were working long hours, eating on-the-go, getting little sleep and operating at full-speed ahead!  While not always the case, many people report that sickness creeps up on them in times of stress, when they're pushing themselves too hard.

Science is beginning to back up this observation!  Studies now show that many viruses and bacteria quietly reside within us until something within the body's internal environment becomes unbalanced. Then they rally into action and attack.

Thankfully, our bodies come naturally equipped with an amazing system that removes and filters viruses and bacteria ~ The Lymphatic System!  To keep our immune system strong and supported, it’s vital that lymph fluid - the clear, watery fluid rich in white blood cells - cleanses our bodies through active movement, as well as contractions and stretching of the skeletal muscles.  As wise as the body is however, there is no internal pump to achieve that movement other than how much we move our bodies!   Our lymphatic system operates most efficiently when our physical and emotional bodies are free of stress and anxiety.

This Spring, become an active participant in the management of your own health and well being as we combine Breath and Movement in a purposeful sequence to include pranayama, twists, and inversions that help de-stress and support the immune system.

Say YES to health and happiness with us!  Appropriate for all levels.

Meditation and Yogic Philosophy, a 6-Week Course with Herb Hoster

**MEDITATION CLASSES WILL RESUME LATER THIS FALL...STAY TUNED!**

A lifelong resident of West Michigan, Herb was introduced to Vedic thought in the late 1970’s at the Vivekananda Monastery, in Ganges, MI, and was later initiated by Swami Bhashyananda of the Chicago Vedanta Society and accompanied him on a pilgrimage to India in the mid 1980’s.  Of particular note in this pilgrimage was an opportunity to participate in the Kumba Mela event at Hardwar, an unforgettable event attended by many hundreds of thousands of fellow pilgrims.  As a disciple of Goswami Kriyananda of the Chicago Kriya Temple, Herb follows the path of mystical esoteric Kriya Yoga. Herb is a certified meditation instructor assisting others in opening up to inner silence and harmony.  Herb has been a supporter of Mother’s Trust in Ganges, MI, since its inception and is a frequent speaker there.  Visit their website for weekly workshops and gatherings at www.motherstrust.org.

Meditation Training and Introduction to Yoga Philosophy

Yoga is by any standard an ancient system, having emerged from the late Bronze Age to become one of the six principle systems of Indian philosophy.  Yoga is not a religion, but rather a comprehensive system that ponders our place in the cosmos, provides us with a means of transcending the seeming insanity of our world and helps us establish a life philosophy the emphasizes positivity, peace and serenity.  The Yoga philosophy is also unique in its compatibility with current findings in the fields of science, including quantum physics, astronomy, and medicine.

Ancient texts such as the Shiva Sutras, the Yoga Spandakarika, Bagavad Gita and others will be used as reference to trace and explore the history of this system.

Meditation is central to Yoga, as it offers us our own personal route to an inner tranquil state.  Various techniques will be presented and numerous guided meditations will be offered.

Monthly Arati and Meditation ~ Last Wednesday of Each Month at 6:00pm:

Hari Das, long time resident at the Vivekananda Monastery in Ganges, MI, welcomes us to the Monastery the last Wednesday of each month at 6:00pm for Arati (blessing) and Meditation.  All are welcome to attend.  Donations are welcome.

Learn more about the Monastery by visiting their website -www.vedantasociety-chicago.org/ganges_hist.htm

Hari Das has been studying, practicing and teaching meditation since 1976, and has been a resident at the Monastery since 1994.   We often discuss meditation techniques and styles, the 8 Limbs of Yoga, the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras, followed by a guided meditation, concluding with a Q&A session.   Hari Das is a firm advocate of meditation, and agrees it is life changing.  "Not only does it relieve stress and angst of the mind and body, it also clears the mind for absolute awareness, and is truly essential to every day living."  The Vivekananda Monastery serves as both an ashram, as well as an educational institution dedicated to teaching inner development aimed at discovering the Divine, both within and without.  Sri Ramakrishna used to say, "Whenever you have leisure, go into solitude for a day or two.  At that time, don't hold any conversation on worldly affairs.  Live either in solitude or in the company of the holy."   Learn the foundation of a beneficial meditation practice with us.

Morning Vinyasa: Gentle Flow Yoga ~ Mon at 7:30am, Tues & Thurs at 9am:
Join Amy on Mondays at 7:30am, Tony on Tuesdays at 9am, and Stacy on Thursdays at 9am.

This is a wonderful Vinyasa practice (Vinyasa translates into 'breath connected to movement') on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9am.  This is a very gentle, healing practice of constant movement from pose to pose, and is very relaxing to the nervous system, brain and heart.  Even while holding a pose, we will often times sway, keeping with the vibration of our breath, and the pulsation of life!  Think of water, and its constant movement even while appearing still, we apply this same technique to our poses.  This practice teaches us how to use our breath to move on the inside as well, rinsing out the lungs and strengthening the diaphragm.  Breathe in health and vitality, breathe out stress and strain!

Power to the Peaceful Yoga ~ Fridays at 9am, and Saturdays at 8:30am:
Gayle leads this class on Fridays at 9am, and Tony on Saturdays at 8:30am.

The practice is organized into three 20 - 25 minute segments beginning with a POWERFUL practice (Sun Salutations, core work, and standing poses), leading into a RESTORATIVE practice (floor work, forward bends, quieting poses, some using props), ending with a PEACEFUL practice of meditation, breathing and Savasana (relaxation).  This class follows the cycle of the day - warming in the beginning (sunrise), vinyasa flow mid-way through (full sun), and cool (lunar) ending.

Power Pilates with Leisal ~ Mondays at 9am:

Leisal relocated to our area from Chicago (originally from Australia), and is excited to share her extensive training in Power Pilates with us!   In case you haven't noticed, Power Pilates has gained some popularity at Satya Yoga, and rightfully so, as Leisal is well qualified, highly trained and very professional - yet fun and playful while killing our abs with her "Magic Circles!"

Participate in this Power Pilates class incorporating flow, quick transitions, and true form.  She promises, with a grin, "It will be challenging, but fun!"

Pranayama ~ Conscious Breathing:  Saturdays at 7:30am:

Are you breathing?  Of course!  Are you breathing consciously to help create the life you desire?

Conscious breathing translates to 'utilizing breath to support our body, our mind, our entire being.'  Certain breathing techniques will help bring more life and excitement, helping release depression and sadness ~ some breathing techniques help release dis-ease or discomfort ~ some balance the right / left brain, therefore balancing the nervous system, thus releasing stress and anxiety, and so on!  Come and learn the POWER OF BREATH, and learn how to manifest the life you are destined for!

Pranayama is the yogic science of breathing often referred to as ‘conscious breathing.’  Through the air we breathe, oxygen is the most vital nutrient in our body.  It is essential for the integrity of our brain, nerves, glands, internal organs, and our immune system as a whole.  Within the air we breathe is also prana.  Prana is the life force energy which exist in all living systems, including humans, animals, plants, and micro-organisms.  Life requires many different variations of movement, including nerve impulses, blood and other fluids, muscles, and joints, and movement of thoughts through the mind.  Ultimately, for all movement, energy is required.  When this energy is present we call this life.  For life to exist, there must be Prana!

Yoga in its various aspects is based upon Prana, whether it be increased flexibility, strength, stamina, self-awareness, emotionally stability, or peace of mind.

In the practice of yoga we understand to change something we must alter the energy which creates it.  To bring about positive changes in the body and mind we must understand the energy through which they work.  Since Prana is taken in through the air we breathe, pranayama breathing exercises increase the amount of air we take in, and therefore increase the intake of Prana.  With increased Prana and oxygen, not only do we stimulate our immune system, but we also strengthen our entire inter-cellular function through the air we exhale.  Almost three fourths of the toxins in our body are released through the exhalation.  Through the exhalation, we release accumulated physical, emotional, and mental toxins which include stress, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, allergies, migraines, acidity, low self-esteem, lack of focus or gratitude - and the list goes on!

These popular pranayama classes offer guided and carefully instructed exercises to strength, purify, and balance the mind, body, and spirit.  Join Brian on Saturdays at 7:30am for this life-changing awareness of breath.

Tae Kwon Do ~ Mondays at 4:30pm and Saturdays at Noon:

No previous experience is necessary - just walk in, and join in!

The philosophy behind this training class is to help teach the student how to prevent and/or avoid a potentially dangerous encounter by learning a system of blocks, kicks, punches, and open-handed strikes.  The advanced ranked practitioners will practice various take-downs or sweeps, throws, joint locks, and breaking of bricks and planks.   Master Guidry places a very strong emphasis on respect, discipline and self-control.  For children and teens, this class offers a tremendous opportunity to help them prepare for life outside of our homes and our supervision.  It is also an excellent chance for them to openly dialogue with the instructor about some very difficult issues such as peer pressure, bullying, and learning how to defend themselves without resorting to violence.   Adults benefit greatly as well.  Beyond the physical skills, all students are taught certain values that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. These five values, or TENETS, are as follows:  COURTESY ( Ye ui ), INTEGRITY ( Yom chi ), PERSEVERANCE ( In nae ), SELF-CONTROL ( JahJeh ), and INDOMITABLE SPIRIT ( Baekjool ).  These classes have obvious physical benefits such as helping tone the muscles, increase flexibility and range/speed of movement - although one of the greatest hidden benefits is the self-confidence and self-empowerment that one will gain by taking preventative measures for his/her own personal safety. The classes are informative and fun for all!  Please dress comfortably, and out of respect for our instructors, arrive promptly!  For more information, or to schedule a demonstration at your school or corporation, please contact us.

YogaCore ~ Wednesdays at 8:30am:

Core workouts of every type are essential for anyone afflicted with the ailments of a stressful lifestyle, including chronic back pain, frequent headaches and a host of other problems. This class is one of the finest ways to gain strength and balance in these most critical muscles.  Why is this important?  Studies have shown that our core muscles take the brunt of our stresses as we go about daily life, acting as the fulcrum against which the rest of our musculoskeletal system flexes. When you have these abdominal and back muscles at the proper fitness levels, movement becomes easier across every vector and at every level of exertion.  Join Gayle for this one hour (challenging!) class, teaching us how to improve not only our posture, but our overall sense of wellbeing.

Yoga-Lates:  Yoga + Pilates ~ Wednesdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 10am:
Maria leads this balanced practice of yoga, core work, and Pilates using the ball / Magic Circle.  Class includes Sun Salutations, standing postures, balancings and inversions, followed by a core strengthening sequence intended to support the spine and abdominals.  Class ends with meditation and relaxation.

Yoga Nidra ~ Mondays at 7:30pm:
The literal translation of Yoga Nidra is Yogic Sleep.  It is an ancient form of meditation that will take you into the deepest levels of relaxation while still remaining fully aware.  When practicing Yoga Nidra, your brainwaves drop into the alpha and theta state.  As you progressively enter deeper and subtler brain waves, you become more relaxed, integrated, expansive and present.  Eventually, you completely shift out of identification with the body, mind and ego.  In this deep state beyond ordinary waking consciousness, you naturally re-align with spirit, allowing you to effortlessly disengage from restrictive physical, mental and emotional patterning.  Here, you are free to create a life that is an expression of higher consciousness, rather than acquired conditioning.  Yoga Nidra brings an incredible calmness, quietness and clarity.  Join Monika & Jeannette in what has quickly become one of our favorite classes!
